Communications Associate

The Communications Associate will work closely with the Communications Manager to implement the organization’s expanding outreach and communications initiatives. The position requires strong writing, research, and analytical skills, and entails a wide range of responsibilities, including: writing and editing for publications, maintaining and updating the DOW website, assisting with media and press outreach, contributing to the ongoing development of the DOW communications strategy, and providing administrative support as required.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
 
1) Writing and Editing
  • Draft articles, press releases, project descriptions, issue summaries, and other copy for DOW print and online publications
  • Serve as assistant editor on all DOW publications, including newsletters, e-bulletins, annual reports, website, and others
  • Conduct research on health and human rights topics from internal and external sources; prepare briefs on same.
2) Publications
  • Coordinate production of printed publications, including newsletters, annual reports, issues briefs, and others
3) Website
  • Update and maintain DOW website utilizing user-friendly content management system (CMS), ensuring new content is posted in a timely manner, and existing content and data are up to date and relevant.
4) Media and Press Relations
  • Research, build, and maintain contact list of journalists, editors, and other press contacts across all media formats spanning both regional and international markets
  • Work closely with the Communications Manager to research specific opportunities to generate media coverage in online, print, and other formats; develop and pitch stories; and track and archive coverage
5) Other
  • Maintain and monitor communications project and production calendars
  • Maintain communications files and photo archives, develop systems for communications related procedures and operations
  • Occasional simple graphic design projects using Word, Photoshop, and other user-friendly applications
  • Provide general administrative and clerical support as needed

REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelors or Masters degree, preferably in journalism, English, political science, international relations, or related field
  • Superior writing, analytical, research, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently, coordinate complex projects, and meet deadlines
  • Highly competent in MS Office applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint; and familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, Quark, and other photo and graphics applications
  • Genuine interest in and familiarity with global health and human rights issues
  • Requires ability to lift and transport materials, file documents, and work at keyboard for extended periods.
