2007 Health and Human Rights Leadership Awards

On May 17, 2007, more then 300 friends, supporters, and volunteers of Doctors of the World-USA (DOW) gathered to honor its 2007 Health and Human Rights Leadership Awards honorees—Victoria L. Sharp, MD,long-timevolunteer and Board President of Doctors of the World-USA; and Stephen Lewis, former United Nations Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa and best-selling author of Race Against Time.

The evening highlighted DOW’s efforts, and those of our honorees and partners, in the fight against AIDS. Around the globe, DOW works with local communities to ensure HIV treatment, care, and support is available to everyone. DOW’s projects also combat the discrimination that fuels the pandemic and the crises that leave women homeless, children abandoned, and families broken.

Board Chair Steven J. Berger and Dr. Jacob A. Gayle, Deputy Vice President for the Ford Foundation’s HIV/AIDS initiatives, presented the awards. The event was hosted by Alina Cho, General Assignment Correspondent for CNN/U.S. The Chair for the evening was John Demsey, Chairman, M·A·C AIDS Fund and Group President, The Estée Lauder Companies Inc.

The dinner raised close to $350,000 to support DOW’s health and human rights work around the globe. Among the leadership gifts were those made by Shereen and Steven J. Berger, FrontPoint Partners, the Center for Comprehensive Care at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, Continuum Health Partners, The Meghji Family Trust, Louise and Leonard Riggio, Stephen M. Sammut, and Harri V. Taranto and Rosalind J. Forse.
